The MGB Department of Urology seek well-qualified candidates to join an interdisciplinary team from the Massachusetts General Brigham and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. Working under the supervision of the principal investigators, the candidate will work as a research assistant in the laboratory and hospital/clinic in collecting, processing, and analyzing patient data and biospecimens in the context of multiple clinically oriented projects with the goal of advancing precision cancer medicine for genitourinary malignancies. Projects will focus on translational and clinical research in genitourinary cancers (prostate, bladder, and testicular cancers) with the goal of discovering new biological mechanisms of disease, improving methods for early cancer detection, and developing novel prognostic and predictive biomarkers.
The qualified candidate will work between the laboratory setting and the clinical setting (clinic, operating room) to consent patients to research studies, collect biospecimens (e.g. blood, urine, tissue), process data and specimens, and support translational research efforts using these specimens. * Clinical specimen collection including tissue (fresh from the operating room and archived from pathology), blood, and urine specimens. Processing of above specimens in the laboratory for storage and/or downstream molecular processing. * Performing phlebotomy to obtain blood samples (training will be provided) * Human tissue processing including tissue digestion for downstream single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analysis, and histopathologic analysis in collaboration with Department of Pathology colleagues. * Standard molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA, and protein extraction from various biologic specimens, and preparing samples for downstream molecular techniques including such as PCR, library preparation for next-generation sequencing, and immunohistochemistry. * Maintenance of clinical patient data and specimen databases. Notifies and seeks assistance from senior lab personnel or supervisor for any questions, unusual experimental conditions or results or needed training. * Collection of additional clinical data. Collects and records study data. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods in order to develop new investigative techniques and/or to determine the most appropriate direction of research. Synthesis may involve use of computer programs as well as data entry into databases. * Prepares written reports on status of research, determination of technical procedures, sequence of operations, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions. Collaborates with supervisor in writing and editing material for publication and may appear as principal or secondary author on publications. * Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general work spaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. May perform, or refer as needed, routine maintenance of lab equipment to include cleaning and replacing of parts. Report equipment malfunctions and needs to management. * Work safely within the lab environment and in performing work duties. Wear personal protective equipment as required. * Attend and may make presentations at lab meetings and journal clubs. * May teach moderately difficult to complex lab techniques to students and research personnel.
