Job Description

The Director of Energy Acquisition is responsible for the energy supply function for AltaGas' US Utilities business (the "Company"), including specifically for Washington Gas Light ("WGL") and for SEMCO Energy ("SEMCO") and the more than 1.5 million customers they serve.

The Director is accountable for establishing the long-term energy strategy for the Company, driving and coordinating energy planning activities, leading the overall portfolio management function, and optimizing Utility assets to ensure the Company has adequate supply to securely and affordably serve firm customers, both today and in the future.

The departmental core functions include demand forecasting, procurement of natural gas and other energy supply, and the delivery of energy supply through scheduling, reconciliation, and invoicing processing. The Director is responsible for overseeing the team's prudent and competitive practices as well as the strategy around those practices. The Director is accountable for the recovery of energy and related costs through regulatory mechanisms for WGL (in Virginia, Maryland and DC) and SEMCO (in Michigan). This person should also maintain a strong network outside the organization with key energy infrastructure firms, including with US interstate pipelines and storage providers and with wholesale energy suppliers to facilitate business opportunities.

You Will:

  • Formulates and oversees the execution of the Energy Acquisition strategy and operating plans for the department, including long term natural gas procurement strategy, pipeline and storage asset optimization, and Choice delivery service program regulations and policies;
  • Thinks strategically about the Company's business goals, needs and strategies, and keeps abreast of industry activities, and can translate market trends and industry news into business opportunities;
  • Represents the Company's interest before external audiences, including informational forums with government authorities, inquiries from media, formal and informal proceedings with regulatory authorities, including expert witness testimony and contractual negotiations, settlement negotiations with pipelines and energy suppliers. Accountable for recovery of all energy costs, including delivery costs, before relevant Public Utility Commission(s);
  • Oversees the Company's load forecasting process which impacts the Company's financial forecast, capacity portfolio requirements and gas commodity needs;
  • Responsible for negotiating and contracting with pipelines and wholesale energy suppliers for firm transportation, storage and peaking resources.
  • Accountable for development of capacity, energy supply and pricing and hedging arrangements to ensure reliable and cost competitive gas supplies;
  • Manages, oversees and administrates supplier interaction within the Choice Delivery Programs and ensures policy adherence for those suppliers;
  • Responsible for establishing, monitoring and continuously improving energy acquisition systems, policies and processes;
  • Responsible for leading engagement with Gas Control to ensure energy supply against customer needs;
  • Oversees all activities related to optimizing all transportation and storage assets for the support of our customers, including allocation of capacity to the asset optimization program and development and execution of asset optimization strategies. Accountable for significant gross revenues from asset optimization activities;
  • Represents the department across the Company in developing strategic planning for customer growth and increasing revenues.
  • Accountable for staffing, systems and resources for Energy Acquisition team, including managing within budget goals a significant department expenses;
  • Coordinates with other internal support units such as Finance & Accounting, Risk, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, etc..

You Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred
  • 10+ Years of well-rounded business experience, 5+ years in energy and/or natural gas industry
  • Demonstrated leadership ability required, 5+ years managing others
  • Experience in energy acquisition, natural gas transportation and interstate strongly desired, including understanding of trading and pricing strategies
  • Extensive knowledge of US pipeline industry, with detailed knowledge of Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest energy markets desired
  • Understanding of natural gas utility regulation desired
  • Ability to proficiently operate a variety of computer software to share, retrieve and research business information and data
  • Ability to successfully influence/persuade to achieve desired business outcome
  • Ability to successfully negotiate business agreements and to resolve disputes with business partners
  • Ability to perform detailed financial analysis, including economic and business analysis
  • Ability to effectively evaluate multiple scenarios and to implement effective solutions to broadly defined business problems
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex messages to diverse audiences at all organizational levels

We offer a competitive salary range of $176,000.00 to $ 256,250.00 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
