About the Department
The College of Engineering at NC State University created in the late 1980s distance education programs to serve the educational needs of the citizens of North Carolina and practicing engineers and computer scientists. The Office of Distance Engineering Education, known as Engineering Online ( EOL) is responsible for the coordination of synchronous and asynchronous classes, registration of students, course delivery, student services, marketing of programs and working with faculty on the Raleigh campus in the development and delivery of engineering classes.
As part of the Engineering Online outreach programs, the Havelock Engineering Program is an ABET accredited, site-based program located on the campus Craven Community College in Havelock. The program supports NC State's land grant mission by serving the Eastern North Carolina community with a local, transformative experience that creates career-ready engineers for regional engineering organizations.
Electrical and mechanical engineering courses, taught by nationally recognized NC State faculty, are delivered live from the Raleigh campus in special EOL studio classrooms equipped for interactive, synchronous course delivery. Each year the program admits 20-30 students who can earn a Bachelor of Science in engineering ( BSE) with a concentration in Electrical Engineering Systems ( EES) or Mechanical Engineering Systems ( MES).
This position reports directly to the Director of Distance Engineering Education Programs and works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at NC State.
Essential Job Duties
The Director is responsible for the operations of the site-based program in Havelock for the College of Engineering. He/she will work closely with and supervise four additional NC State full-time employees and other part-time employees as needed to support the program. The Director serves as a leader who works alongside the small staff of NC State personnel who care deeply about the growth and development of students in the program and in facilitating academic excellence and supporting the local community . More specifically, the responsibilities include:
Administration: 65%

  • Oversees all aspects of the Havelock program including the academic requirements and procedures, advising, recruiting, admissions, student development, local instruction of lab and senior design projects and engineering classes delivered from the Raleigh campus in coordination with Engineering Online, college units and University personnel.
  • Continues to develop, review and revise the four-year BSE degree program to ensure the needs of constituents and partnering organizations are met.
  • Works closely with the faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Electrical Engineering, ensuring both departments are consulted during program curriculum changes.
  • Develops and oversees the local budget and expenditures.
  • Coordinates the synchronous course delivery of classes delivered from Raleigh or from other site-based programs.
  • Develops appropriate marketing and development strategies to meet the needs of the local program. Coordinates appropriate outreach opportunities, for marketing purposes and program visibility.
  • Serves as a liaison with NAVAIR, Cherry Point personnel and Craven Community College in the use of resources for the engineering programs.
  • Drives program continuous improvement to ensure the needs of the University, constituents, and partnering organizations needs are met.
  • Coordinates the meetings of the advisory boards.
  • Builds and maintains partner relationships and participates in joint initiatives with partners, such as NAVAIR, Craven Community College, and the City of Havelock.


Teaching Local Classes: 20%
  • Teaches appropriate classes and labs for the local BSE degree program.
Supervision of Staff: 5%
  • Supervises local NC State staff, temporary staff, and student workers and conducts annual reviews of appropriate staff positions.
Written Communications 5% (more in years of the ABET Study & Review)

  • Prepares the program self-study for ABET accreditation and manages site visits every six years in cooperation with the College of Engineering's ABET visits.
  • Prepare an annual assessment of the Havelock programs for the college.

Student Support: 5%

  • Continues to monitor the academic performance of the engineering students and the evaluation of the performance based upon the ABET accreditation standards and guidelines approved for the degree program.
  • Mentoring of engineering students
  • Advises students concerning their academic plans and future career goals

Other Responsibilities
Builds and maintains partner relationships and participates in joint initiatives with partners, such as NAVAIR, Craven Community College, and the City of Havelock.
Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree in engineering plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
  • MS Engineering is required for SACS and teaching undergraduate classes.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience with the use of distance education technology in the delivery of synchronous and asynchronous courses.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of people effectively in verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to function as a working member and leader of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Must possess excellent management and organizational skills in the use of time and resources.
  • Demonstrated track record of building relationships with partnering organizations.
  • A knowledge of systems thinking and how it applies to engineering design, problem solving and leadership.
  • Willingness to travel to Raleigh for meetings and to other locations for recruiting purposes.
  • Experience in mentoring students.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. due to interactions with the DOD program partner.
  • Be willing to perform other duties as needed for the academic program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace or Industrial.
  • PhD in Engineering
  • 5 years in engineering practice working in industry, government of academia with extensive industry interactions.
  • University teaching experience, familiarization with undergraduate engineering education programs and ABET accreditation processes and procedures.
