We are seeking highly motivated and skilled nuclear research scientists to join our dynamic research team. You will play a pivotal role in advancing the field of nuclear science and technology by contributing to various research initiatives across multiple areas. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, is a leading U.S. research facility renowned for its contributions to nuclear science and technology. Initially focused on nuclear weapons development, ORNL now conducts extensive research in reactor design, nuclear materials, and advanced nuclear energy solutions. It operates several research reactors and engages in efforts related to nuclear nonproliferation, medical isotope production, and innovative industrial applications. Through collaboration with various partners, ORNL continues to advance next-generation nuclear technologies and address safety and security challenges in the nuclear field.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research and development in one or more of the following areas:
    • Isotope Science and Enrichment.
    • Advanced Nuclear Materials
    • Advanced Nuclear Reactors
    • Nuclear Safety and Risk Assessment
    • Material Security and Counterproliferation
    • Neutronics
    • Radiation Transport
    • Irradiation Engineering
    • Fuel Cycle Analysis
    • Nuclear Materials Disposition
    • Dynamic Testing and Experiment Analysis
    • Advanced Detection
    • Data Science and Modeling and Simulation for Nuclear Research
    • Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the development of advanced engineering technologies and scalable applications for nuclear systems.
  • Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations to communicate findings and contribute to project proposals.
  • Stay up-to-date with current trends and innovations in nuclear science, energy systems, and regulatory requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, nuclear physics, chemistry, or a related field, with a focus on nuclear science and technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong research background in one or more of the following areas:
    • Radiation transport
    • Nuclear safety
    • advanced materials, or reactor physics
    • Isotope Science and Enrichment
    • Advanced Nuclear Materials
    • Advanced Nuclear Reactors
    • Nuclear Safety and Risk Assessment
    • Material Security and Counterproliferation
    • Neutronics
    • Radiation Transport
    • Irradiation Engineering

    • Nuclear Materials Disposition
    • Dynamic Testing and Experiment Analysis
    • Advanced Detection
    • Data Science and Modeling and Simulation for Nuclear Related Research
    • Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis
  • Experience with computational modeling and simulation tools, as well as data analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and best practices in nuclear research and safety.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting research findings and engaging with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results within deadlines.

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
