Primarily responsible for performing the regular daily operations of the Vascular Laboratory, including integrating the responsibilities with the other technical employee(s) within the laboratory.
Performs non-invasive and vascular ultrasound testing and provides preliminary interpretation. Manages regular day-to-day operations to ensure efficient operation of the unit. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager and lead sonographer and within the established hospital as well as departmental policies and procedures and all applicable laws, the vascular sonographer performs the following functions to include but not limited to the following: * Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, family, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment * Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all patients, family, visitors and fellow employees * Reviews the physician's requisition for completeness of information and to check for specific instructions * Reviews patient's medical record to obtain pertinent clinical history and correlates data with exam to be performed. Consults with ordering physician, if necessary * Greets patient and verifies patient identification * Performs non-invasive vascular examinations utilizing appropriate equipment (i.e. Doppler ultrasound, B-mode real time imaging and color Doppler imaging, etc.) to include but not limited to: upper and lower extremity arterial and venous duplex, renal duplex, AV fistulas, carotid duplex, aorta and PVR/ABI exams * Provides referring physicians with preliminary interpretations and prepares preliminary reports for interpreting physicians * Records and bills for all examinations performed: ensures all pertinent information is appropriately completed * Reports any unusual occurrences related to patients, staff, equipment or other departmental related questions/concerns directly to the Operations Manager and Technical Director of the non-invasive lab * Maintains equipment to ensure it is kept clean and in proper working order. Notifies the Operations Manager and clinical engineering of any equipment malfunction(s) * Maintains the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related PHI * Maintains patient log and statistics * Maintains the safety, integrity and comfort of the patient at all times * Recognizes emergency situations and provides assistance to the patient or health care team * Retrieves and communicates test reports to physician offices, nursing units, emergency department or other departments as requested * Participates in the departmental quality improvement meetings * Assists with the quality improvement program IAC process as requested * Provides instruction to medical students, residents and fellows regarding the proper use of equipment as well as scanning techniques and protocols * Orders and maintains supplies for the non-invasive vascular lab * Performs other duties as needed REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: (Examples: Ability to work independently and take initiative; Good judgment and problem solving skills; Communication skills; Interpersonal and organizational skills; Level of confidentiality) * Comprehensive understanding of vascular anatomy, pathophysiology and hemodynamics in order to recognize normal and abnormal vascular structures, function and abnormalities of blood flow * Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, tissue characteristics and measurements of blood flow, including the biological effects of ultrasound * Familiarity with other types of diagnostic tests (i.e. clinical laboratory tests, peripheral angiography, CT scans) and be able to integrate vascular ultrasound results with the results of such other tests * Well versed in medical terminology * Critical thinking and the ability to effectively manage emergent situations * Ability to work independently and take initiative in completing tasks * Demonstrates superior customer service skills * Ability to prioritize and manage a variety of tasks * Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER: * Education: Graduate of an accredited program for Diagnostic Medical Sonography and registry eligible required * Experience: Minimum of 1 (one) year of experience performing a wide range of vascular ultrasound exams preferred * Certification: Required to obtain Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) within 6 (six) months of employment. Additional certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) preferred. Must maintain active certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
