About This Role

This position provides important research support to all activities at the John C. Pair Horticultural Center. Including plot layout and planting, research plot maintenance, harvest, data collection, and leading seasonal workers in daily responsibilities. The individual will also communicate and provide research support for research scientists in Manhattan and Olathe and the facility in Haysville. The position provides crucial support for the sweet potato development program, industrial hemp research, woody plant development, and general facilities maintenance as time and needs permit at the center.


About Us

This exciting opportunity is with the Kansas State University John C. Pair Horticultural Center located in Haysville, KS, just south of Wichita, KS. The facility conducts horticultural research and extension activities in landscape plants, turf management, fruits and vegetable production, and industrial hemp, to further the horticultural industry and assist the residents of Kansas. The successful individual will assist in all activities at the center including field work, greenhouse operations, planting, harvesting, data collection, and general station maintenance. The individual must be detail oriented, enjoy working outside, and able to work with a small group of co-workers.


Worksite Option

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • High School diploma or equivalent with 1 year experience in the green industry or related agricultural field.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • 10 years experience in a Horticulture or Landscape associated atmosphere
  • Pesticide Applicators License
  • Must be able to work in a team type atmosphere, have excellent communication skills, and effectively relate to the general public.

  • Experience working with traditional farm equipment


  • Ability to understand experimental design and field plot research procedures and objectives



Other Requirements:




  • Valid driver's license upon appointment


  • Tractors and accessory attachments (plows, mowers, cultivators, sprayers, etc.), used daily.


  • Hand and power tools - used daily.


  • Pickup truck - used weekly.


  • Computer skills (email, word processing, spread sheet) - used daily

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship
