Job Summary - Supervisor, Sterile Processing

Maintains shift accountability related to staffing, quality concerns, equipment functionality, and surgical demand at each assigned site. Responsible for maintaining adequate staff levels to ensure quality services in a cost effective and efficient manner. Mentors and provides performance reviews related to employee development. Assists the manager with change management, education, disciplinary actions, and performance improvement plans for each department. Collects, monitors, analyzes and summarizes data to identify and provide solutions for inefficiencies and/or quality assurance issues in addition to record retention. Adheres to accreditation and regulatory compliance standards for sterile processing. Troubleshoots and interacts with other departments such as the operating room, hospital floors, physician offices, clinics, supply chain, and environmental services.

Essential Functions - Supervisor, Sterile Processing
  • Supervises the activities of staff and manages the workflow priorities at assigned site(s). Reallocates departmental resources to other Sterile Processing Departments. Manages equipment needs to ensure minimal downtime.

  • Responsible for the development of staff schedules including updates to meet changing needs on a daily basis. Monitors staffing needs to ensure coverage is adequate for surgical demand within departmental budget.

  • Conduct interviewing and hiring to fill open vacancies to align FTEs with appropriate staffing levels. Monitor sign on bonus and Tier System advancement. Issue performance improvement plans, corrective actions, and annual performance evaluations. Provides direction and support to team members to ensure SPD policies and procedures including standard work are adhered to for effectiveness and efficiency. Facilitates the training and continuing education of employees.

  • Makes suggestions for process changes and provides input into policies, procedures, best practices, and departmental objectives to meet The Joint Commission, CMS, and AAMI standards. Conducts rounding and implements any changes necessary to meet departmental requirements.

  • May perform Sterile Processing Technician job responsibilities as needed, as determined by the Director/Manager.

  • Promotes safety practices within each department to ensure proper handling techniques, ergonomics, and environmental awareness.

Qualifications -Supervisor, Sterile Processing

  • Required Associate's Degree or equivalent

  • 2 years of relevant experience related field Required

  • 2 years of relevant experience Sterile Processing Department supervision Preferred

  • CRT-Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) - CBSPD Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution Effective January 1, 2020, all leaders within the role must be certified within 18 months from the date of hire. 1 1/2 Yrs required Or

  • CRT-Registered Central Services Technician, Certified (CRCST) - IAHCSMM International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management Effective January 1, 2020, all leaders within the role must be certified within 18 months from the date of hire. 1 1/2 Yrs required
