The Cytotechnologist (CT) is responsible for working within the established guidelines of the Cytology Department as assigned. The Cytotechnologist is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors and the Management Team. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the technical performance of laboratory procedures, solving practical and analytical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change, Cytotechnology is the microscopic study of cells for evidence of disease, in particular for the diagnosis of cancer. The field is perhaps best known for the "Pap Smear", an evaluation of cells from the uterus of the female which can reveal a diagnosis of some kinds of cancer or pre-cancer, as well as inflammatory conditions.


Responsibilities
  • Determines acceptability of specimens within guidelines
  • Stores specimens under appropriate conditions as quickly as possible
  • Ensures reagents used to process and stain specimens are dated, of sufficient quantity and within expiration limits
  • Performs processing/ordering computer functions correctly
  • Coordinates schedules of Cytology Assistant and Cytology Preparatory Technician to ensure specimen processing is covered

Qualifications

o CT (ASCP) certified or eligible

o Bachelor's Degree in Field

o Must include one year of formal training in a school approved by the American Medical Association followed by certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
