Job Description

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a part-time Supervising Attorney to join the Immigration Law Unit (ILU) and help manage our limited scope representation legal clinic work. This is a temporary position through December 2025.

In these times when demand for immigration legal services is tremendous, ILU has developed a successful limited scope legal clinic model that we will continue in 2025. The range of case matters handled in these legal clinics may include work permit assistance, TPS, and motions for change of venue but may also involve other legal matters. This Supervising Attorney role would be responsible for supervising the work of our limited scope legal clinic work, including the legal services provided to clients and overseeing the training of volunteer application preparers for legal clinics. In partnership with the Legal Clinic Coordinator and other ILU and LAS staff, the Supervising Attorney would develop best practices, training materials and resources, as well as ensure that ILU case matters are timely updated with data required for grants management.

The ideal candidate must have considerable immigration legal experience, be a talented leader with a deep commitment to public interest practice and be able to build strong relationships with stakeholders in the legal, court, and service communities.

The Immigration Law Unit of The Legal Aid Society is a recognized leader in the delivery of legal services to immigrants in all five boroughs of New York City and surrounding counties within the New York District of the USCIS. The Unit provides low-income New Yorkers with free comprehensive immigration services ranging from deportation defense to adjustment of status to legal permanent residence and citizenship applications. The Unit specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve the society's diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. Unit staff represent immigrants before USCIS, immigration judges in removal proceedings, and the Board of Immigration Appeals, as well as in federal court on habeas corpus petitions, petitions for review, administrative and judicial appeals, and other matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal Clinic Supervision Duties



  • Ensure accountability and maintenance of practice standards associated with the immigration legal clinics
  • Manage legal services provided at immigration legal clinics
  • Help to manage clinic workflows and ensure quality of application submissions
  • Recruit and train application preparers
  • Identify legal trends and share relevant findings with ILU and LAS staff
  • Train and present on immigration legal topics related to legal clinic work, as needed
  • Help with community outreach events, as needed
  • Help develop best practices to share with other providers
  • Work with ILU and other Civil Practice administrative staff to ensure that ILU case matters are timely updated with data required for grants management
  • Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
  • Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community
  • Other duties as assigned



Team Development and Supervision



  • Schedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work schedule requests following the guidance of LAS policy and procedures
  • Attend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human Resources
  • Conduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Supervise direct reports in setting performance standards, provide routine feedback as well as coaching/counseling, and issue disciplinary action as needed
  • Identify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completed



Professional Development and other duties as assigned



  • Participate in continuous professional development
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment
  • Other duties as assigned



QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:



  • Admission to NYS Bar preferred, but will consider those who are admitted to any state bar and qualified to practice federal immigration law
  • At least 4 years of experience in immigration law
  • Experience in a wide variety of immigration legal matters, both affirmative and removal defense-related



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Proficiency in Spanish is desirable

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range: $99,444 - $163,507
