Optical Thin Film Coating Technician
Position Description
An Optical Thin Film Coating Technician will work under moderate supervision in production with coating optical surfaces. The successful candidate assists in developing data and in implementing equipment calibrations. Candidate could also assist in developing and implementing various test procedures and evaluations with or without instructions.
Essential Functions
- Perform operations to assemble, rework, repair, and test a variety of optical substrate products to support optical gyroscope-based units at a component and subassembly level.
- Wash, load and transfer delicate optical components into and out of various machinery.
- Interpret operation sheets, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and written instructions.
- Perform self-inspections related to in-process assembly as part of methods of operations.
- Record data for acceptable criteria and perform data reduction operations.
- Visual uncoated and coated optical components for defects and imperfections utilizing microscopes and various methods (ex: spectrophotometry).
- Performs other tasks directed by Management to satisfy company objectives.
Critical Competencies
- Has working knowledge in the use of hand tools, power tools, and electronic equipment.
- Able to use a variety of assembly equipment, meters, microscopes, clean room facilities and related processing equipment to maintain customer standards and specifications.
- Capable of working independently as well as within a cross-functional team of engineers, technicians and managers.
- Detail-oriented and a demonstrated background in precision part manufacturing/thin film coating.
- Hands-on experience with one or more of the following techniques: ion beam deposition, optical metrology, ellipsometry, spectrophotometry, optical profilometry, optical surface roughness characterization and measurement, laser assembly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
- Experience working with SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) required.
General Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate degree preferred.
- 2-5 years of experience with optical thin film coating methods.
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US, visa sponsorship not available.
- Knowledge of parts inspection and coating machinery.
- Previous experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment preferred.
- Previous experience working in ISO9001/AS9100 certified manufacturing facilities preferred.
- Previous experience working in cleanrooms (ISO Class 4 through Class 7) preferred.
