JOB SUMMARY
Works under general supervision to provide technical expertise, coordination, administrative support, and/or supervision in histology laboratory.

This position will oversee and develop immunohistochemical staining procedures for the evaluation of neurodegenerative disease pathology in human autopsy brain bank specimens; evaluate tissue staining using qualitative and quantitative techniques; create tissue microarray blocks and slides from brain bank library of cases; create digital whole slide images of stained microscopic slides; record data in online databases and maintain online database of specimen inventory and evaluation status; select brain bank cases for research projects by collaborating investigators; work with faculty supervisor and other collaborators to develop machine learning algorithms to perform pattern analysis recognition of pathologic processes associated with neurodegeneration and aging; assist in the preparation and presentation of data at scientific meetings; assist in the preparation of research data for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    High School Diploma or GED, successful completion of histology training program for Clinical Setting or
    Bachelor's Degree in Biology or other related field with 2 years of specific Electron Microscopy courses for a Research Setting or
    Associate's Degree in Biology or related field


  • Experience
    4 years of experience as Histology Technician or equivalent with High School Diploma
    2 years of experience as Histology Technician or equivalent with Associate Degree


  • Licenses and Certifications
    (HT) HISTOLOGIC TECHNICIAN Required for clinical setting (HT or HTL) by ASCP.OR Upon Hire


JOB DUTIES



  • Prepares special (e.g., livers, kidneys, etc.) histology preparations.
  • Performs specialized histology and histochemical procedures, such as those for enzymes, polysaccharides, and immunoflourescents.
  • Maintains laboratory inventories and quality control; constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment; troubleshoots equipment as necessary.
  • Prepares teaching materials for use in instruction of medical students and resident physicians.
  • Assists in operation and management of laboratory; determines work priorities and advises histology technicians of lower grade as to appropriate procedures and techniques to be followed.
  • Participates in research and development, review of current literature, and revision of laboratory operation and methodology.
  • May serve as bench instructor for histology training program.
  • Collects and organizes research data for project reports.
  • Provides working supervision for small group of histology technicians, students, and/or other supportive laboratory personnel of lower grade.
  • Performs duties of Histology Technician as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
