Position Overview

Position Summary:
Tutoring Center Tutor positions are temporary, part-time positions hired each semester based on need. Tutors are responsible for providing one-on-one support to students in writing, math, science and/or general academic skills in a peer mentor environment, helping students succeed in their coursework.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic support to students at various stages of their learning in at least one subject area (writing, math, science, or general academic skills).
  • Support the Tutoring Center directors with planning, outreach, and other related tasks as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to the Tutoring Center's policies and procedures.
  • Utilize remote tools, such as video conferencing and phone calls, to assist students.
  • Communicate effectively with students through email and phone.
  • Accurately document tutoring sessions and input data as required.
  • Actively engage in all tutor training sessions.
  • Submit weekly reports to the supervisor.
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Associate's degree or working on associate's degree with 2.75 cumulative GPA.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must be able to work with individuals with diverse educational backgrounds
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic principles in at least one of the following disciplines: writing and reading, math, science.
  • Interest in working collaboratively with students and with other tutors.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming and positive environment for all students.
  • Strong desire to work with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to tutor students
  • Must possess good organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via email and telephone.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work is performed Monday - Thursday evenings and/or Saturdays.
