Job Summary

Involves the promotion of a safety-supportive culture and consistent application of practice-based medicine. Analyzes and identifies trends from adverse-event reports. Supports educational programs in patient safety, implements organization and regulatory safety initiatives using performance improvement and quality tools. Helps to spread "lessons learned" from adverse events, as well as successful initiatives, to other units and departments, fosters a clinical environment of service excellence.

Reporting to the Director of Patient Safety, BCH-SF, serves as a lead or a resource on patient safety operational activities, projects and initiatives. Leads or participates on projects of large scope and / or significant complexity or risk. Has clinical licensure to provide expertise on events. Facilitates mitigation of safety events through partnership with clinical and operational teams. Supports patient safety annual goals and action plans for compliance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $94,400 - $201,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Quality & Safety consists of Adult Quality & Safety, Benioff Children's Hospitals (BCH) Quality & Safety, Hospital Epidemiology & Infection Prevention, Clinical Documentation Integrity, Health Equity, Risk Management, and Regulatory Affairs. The teams are made of multidisciplinary professionals with diverse backgrounds. The role of the Department is to support UCSF Health to deliver safe, equitable and high-quality care to the communities we serve.

Patient Safety is a division within the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. The focus of the Patient Safety division is preventing, mitigating, or reducing harm from medical errors and system defects. Activities include risk surveillance and analysis of potential or actual medical errors and hazardous conditions, and process improvement to prevent future adverse events.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or health discipline, or licensed clinician in the State of California (e.g., Nursing, Pharmacy, Respiratory, Physical Therapist), and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • 5 or more years of clinical experience working within hospital or ambulatory setting.
  • Clinical License (e.g., RN, PharmD, PA, MD, RT, PT,OT)
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with a broad range of clinical and technical staff, representatives of external regulatory agencies, and mentoring staff.
  • Advanced ability to effectively convey highly complex clinical, technical, and educational information both verbally and in writing, and to produce high-quality reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced skills in data analysis, project management, facilitating group work, and working in a hospital environment with systems improvement.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical quality-of-care issues and patient safety methodologies, tools,
  • regulatory requirements, and policies.
  • Advanced knowledge of various clinical and business software packages and of the specialized applications and data management programs used in patient safety and quality improvement
  • systems.
  • Experience in a large multi facility health system/ academic institution
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)

License/Certification


  • Clinical License (e.g., RN, PharmD, PA, MD, RT, PT,OT)
