Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (
CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (
UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member in the Recreation Therapy profession for a nine-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the School's Recreation Therapy program beginning August 2025.
Appointment at the Assistant or Associate rank is dependent on qualifications. The successful candidate will be capable of teaching a variety of undergraduate courses in the program's curriculum. Further, the successful candidate will conduct research, publish, write grants, recruit and mentor students, and provide community engagement and professional service. The candidate may also assume responsibilities related to the internship, practicum, and other fieldwork experiences when needed.
This is a non-remote position. The candidate will work in a collaborative interdisciplinary academic setting. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation, or a closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation. Doctoral candidates are eligible to apply but must complete their degree requirements prior to the August 2025 start date to be eligible for employment.
CTRS credential through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification LRT credential through the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure (or eligible for LRT credential)- Evidence of successful college teaching in recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation.
- Substantial experience working in recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation or closely related area of practice with diverse populations.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience |
In addition to the minimum qualifications, preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
- Demonstrated success in research evidenced through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other scholarly products.
- Capability for grant activity in recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation or a closely related area of scholarship.
- Ability to form successful community engagement including partnerships with relevant healthcare and other community agencies.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with constituents across the School, College and University.
- Previous experience with program accreditation, particularly with CAAHEP/CARTE.
- Evidence of successful technology integration in course delivery including the Canvas course management system.
- Previous successful experience serving on state, regional, and/or national committees or boards specific to recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation, or a closely related field.
- Although this is an open-rank search, there is a preference to hire an outstanding candidate at the Assistant Professor rank.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Recreation Therapy Program at
UNCW has existed for over 40 years and became accredited by
CAAHEP/
CARTE in 2020. The program has three full-time and a mix of part-time faculty. The curriculum includes 15 required RT content courses and two field placements; electives in aquatic therapy, adapted sports, cognitive retraining, stress and pain management, child life, and assistance dog training, among others; as well as a 4+1 combined BA in RT and MS in Applied Gerontology.
The Recreation Therapy program is housed within the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (
SHAHS) which is a large and growing academic unit with over 1600 students and 54 full time faculty. See:
