Ambulatory Pharmacy Job Summary

Under close supervision of a pharmacist preceptor, learns the basic skills required to be a pharmacist, using the State Board of Pharmacy Intern Manual and Pharmacy Internship Activities Checklist as a guide. Performs pharmacy-related functions to provide optimal pharmaceutical care.

Essential Functions:
  • Trains in theoretical, practical, and technical aspects of the pharmaceutical field under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
    * Interprets and clarifies orders for all types of medications while discussing questionable orders, illegible prescriptions, medications not authorized for prescriber and similar issues with a licensed pharmacist.
    * Evaluates orders for possible chemical, physical or therapeutic incompatibilities.
    * Monitors drug therapy for potential drug-drug, drug-food, and drug-disease interactions.
    * Monitors patients for proper nutrition as applicable
    * Monitors drug therapies for appropriateness
    * Provides therapeutic monitoring of targeted medications
    * Advises patients, family and medical staff on use of various medications including dosage, side effects, drug interactions, and composition.

  • Prepares medications appropriately (may include)
    * Fills medication cassettes and completes appropriate documentation.
    * Pre-packs bulk medications and completes appropriate documentation.
    * Prepares sterile and non-sterile products
    Compounds ointments, creams, oral solutions, and other medications
    Prepares chemotherapeutic agents.
    Compounds total parenteral nutrition solutions as applicable.
    Compounds large-volume intravenous mixtures as applicable.
    Appropriately documents on the compounding record.
    * Packs and prepares drugs being used in clinical investigations.
    * Checks non-patient specific unit dose medications being stocked in automated dispensing cabinets or other secure locations as applicable.

  • Interacts with appropriate healthcare staff and patients to identify, clarify and fill orders for pharmaceutical needs, under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
    * Assists in entering medication orders into the computer system when applicable.
    * Completes paperwork needed to track usage, outdated goods, billing, and shortages.
    * Coordinates insurance billing including third party prescriptions.
    * Handles and triages telephone/window inquiries.
    * Assists with charging and crediting medication returns.
    * Assists with the medication reconciliation process

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, environmental and infection control standards, and adheres to regulatory requirements.
    * Complies with established departmental and DHHA policies, procedures, code of conduct, quality improvement, infection control, and safety initiatives.
    * Maintains secure storage and records of all medications
    * Maintains medications in accordance with manufacturer's requirements
    * Complies and assists with adherence to regulatory requirements (State Board, Joint Commission, CMS etc...)

  • Restocks and delivers drugs and related supplies to patient care areas or clinics, as assigned, including automated dispensing machines.
    * Prepares inventories, orders drugs and supplies, receives drugs and stocks shelves in various pharmacy locations.
    * Logs drug receipts appropriately when inventory process owner or Stockkeeper is absent.
    * Maintains stock in accordance with manufacturers' requirements.
    * Notifies the inventory process owner or Stockkeeper when stock levels are low.
    * Assists with inventory maintenance and control including auditing of record keeping.
    * Restocks medications in automated dispensing cabinets or other secure locations as applicable.

  • Enhances personal and coworkers' professional growth and development
    * Completes and meets the competency standards including education and training that is specific to the patient populations and practice site served. Keeps job knowledge current.
    * Assists in the training of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy interns and pharmacy students as applicable.
    * Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, huddles, and departmental trainings as applicable.
    * Maintains pharmacy intern licensure in good standing.

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:
    • PHARMIN-Pharmacy Intern - BPS - Board of Pharmacy Specialties Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to work as a team member.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures.
    • Knowledge of medications and medical supplies.
    • Knowledge of record-keeping techniques.
    • Mathematical computation skills.
    • Organization and communication skills.
    • Good typing, keyboarding and proofreading skills.
    • Ability to maintain adequate inventory/supplies.
