Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division currently has openings for Mechanical Technicians - Fabrication to join our team on the ALS and BELLA programs.

What You'll Do:Precision Fabrication: Craft and fabricate high-quality components and assemblies using advanced machining tools and techniques.

Custom Solutions: Work with engineers and designers to bring blueprints to life, solving complex machining challenges with creativity and skill.

Diverse Materials: Work with metals, composites, and plastics to meet a wide range of project specifications.

Equipment Mastery: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot CNC machines, lathes, mills, and other fabrication equipment.

Collaborative Problem Solving: Partner with cross-disciplinary teams to support innovative research and engineering projects.

Quality Assurance: Ensure all parts meet stringent quality standards through precise measurements and inspections.

What You'll Bring:

Level 1 Requirements:



  • 1-2 years of experience in mechanical, electro-mechanical, or machining roles.
  • Knowledge of and experience with hand tools, power tools, and manual machine tools. (Knowledge of and experience with CNC machine tools is beneficial but not required.)
  • Technical expertise in fabrication, machining, or assembly processes.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations.


Level 2 Requirements:



  • 2-4 years of experience in mechanical fabrication or machining.
  • Advanced knowledge of machining tools, including manual and CNC equipment.
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD/CAM software, including editing G-code.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and apply GD&T standards.
  • Competency in troubleshooting and maintaining mechanical systems.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and train other technicians.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency with Esprit CAM software, and SolidWorks and/or Creo CAD software.
  • Expertise in diagnosing and troubleshooting machine tool failures.
  • Familiarity with ANSI Y14.5 GD&T standards.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

Salary:

The full hourly range for the Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 1) is $28.65 - $41.52. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

The full hourly range for the Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 2) is $34.36 - $49.83. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
