Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Environment, Health & Safety Division has an opening for a Medical Assistant to join the team. In this role you will support the Health Services clinic team members in providing for the needs of ill and injured employees and rendering the best possible care. What You Will Do: Clinic Reception
- Greet and route patients in a professional manner, respecting and guarding confidentiality of employees and other staff members.
- Schedule/reschedule appointments, including referrals, using the electronic scheduling system or paper if the electronic system is down.
- Field and route telephone calls appropriately, taking clear and accurate messages.
- Direct or escort patients as necessary. Assure that employees leaving the clinic have appropriate instructions, forms and referral information.
- Assist in processing of medical records received by mail/fax/electronic health portal into the electronic health records.
- Responsible for clinic opening, closing, and maintenance procedures.
Intake and Patient Care
- Obtain, document, and report to the providers clinical data necessary for the rooming process of patients, according to established guidelines, This includes but is not limited to reason for visit (chief complaint), other employee interactions, vital signs, height, weight, medications and allergies.
- For medical surveillance and voluntary exams, explain tests and obtain written informed consent prior to conducting any testing.
- Assist clinicians as needed with exams and procedures, using sterile techniques if indicated.
- Under the supervision of doctors/nurse practitioners, fit and apply wraps, splints, slings, crutches and provide patient instruction in use of the same.
- Instruct patients in specimen collection, perform phlebotomy and prepare specimens for pick-up.
- Perform various tests ordered by the providers, including, but not limited to: blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, glucose fingerstick test, visual acuity, electrocardiograms, urine testing, audiometry and spirometry testing, pregnancy testing, strep testing. Administer immunizations.
- Provide support for various wellness initiatives, including but not limited to flu clinics, blood pressure screenings, cholesterol screenings and health and safety faire events at on-site and off-site locations.

Clinic Maintenance and Supplies
- Keep inventory of supplies and restock as needed, including health education materials; advise the clinical manager of expiring supplies and need for re-order. Unpack and shelve supplies.
- Assist with electronic supply systems, "Sortly" or other future systems.
- Clean/sanitize patient care areas between patients and at the end of the day.
- Process biohazardous waste in accordance with written procedures on a weekly basis.
- Provide periodic maintenance and cleaning of equipment, e.g., spirometry and audiometry equipment, cold packs, urine analyzer.
- Perform daily calibration of audio and spirometry equipment.
- Assist the nursing team with special projects, such as maintenance and distribution of emergency trauma kits.
What is Required: At the Level 2
- Current California Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited program.
- 2-4 years of experience in a medical office setting that includes medical assisting, and medical receptionist duties and appointment making.
- Strong computer skills, medical terminology knowledge and experience with basic medical charting; proficiency in use of electronic medical records.
- Demonstrated experience with phlebotomy and immunizations skills.
- Demonstrated experience performing medical tests e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
- Certification or the ability to become certified in CPR.
- Familiarity with HIPAA and the handling of personal health information (PHI).
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, which include lifting boxes of supplies up to 50 lbs, bending and reaching for clinic maintenance, and the ability to sit and perform computer related functions.
At the Level 3 (in addition to the requirements of Level 2)
- 4-6 years of experience in a medical office setting that includes medical assisting, and medical receptionist duties and appointment making.
- Advanced experience with phlebotomy and immunizations skills.
- Significant experience performing medical tests e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
- Advanced understanding of HIPAA and the handling of personal health information (PHI).
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with UC, LBNL, and DOE policies and procedures.
- Experience with Workers' Compensation processes and required documentation.
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
- The hourly range for this position at level 2 is $27.42-$36.91. This range is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
- The hourly range for this position at level 3 is $31.54-$42.46. This range is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
