About the Position

This position drives innovation in transportation technology by researching, piloting, and deploying new and emerging solutions. You will play a key role in shaping the future of traffic management and operations through the integration of advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), data systems, network communications, and other technologies and the development of tools and resources for supporting Transportation System Management & Operations (TSMO) initiatives.

Key responsibilities include strategic planning, managing, and directing the New & Emerging Technology Program and the Traffic Technology Branch. This involves testing and implementing advanced technologies such as Connected Vehicle (CV) technology, Integrated Corridor Management (ICM), and data management solutions. The position also spearheads the technical focuses of the AZTech partnership and regional ITS initiatives, particularly those funded by USDOT, FHWA, or MAG.

We Require

  • Five years of engineering experience, including traffic engineering, project management, contract administration and management

  • Three years of experience working with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), telecommunications, computer networking management, database administration, and supervising programming applications

  • One year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline such as, but not limited to, Chemical, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering

  • Postgraduate degrees or professional-level-related experience may substitute for the education or experience on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Registration as a Civil Engineer or a closely related field by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona Registration within six months of employment

  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification

  • Federally funded Project Management experience

  • Ability to strategically lead a technical team

  • Implementation of new and emerging technology experience

Job Contributions

  • Manage the daily activities of the Traffic Technology Branch, including training, evaluating staff performance, and directing consultants/contractors in the development and maintenance of MCDOT traffic and ITS technology

  • Oversee the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of traffic and ITS technologies, including cross-jurisdictional traffic management systems, Regional Archived Data System (RADS) and other data warehouses, traffic technology telecommunications systems, and the MCDOT SMARTDrive ProgramSM

  • Coordinate budget preparation and manage capital and operational costs, and oversee contracts, purchase orders, and payment approvals

  • Develop and advance technology strategies and applications, supporting initiatives like Integrated Corridor Management (ICM), data management, Connected Vehicle use cases, and as defined by the AZTech Regional Partnership

  • Support the AZTech Program, committees, and partnerships with academia, public and private sectors, and vehicle manufacturers to promote the advancement of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies and the MCDOT SMARTDrive ProgramSM

  • Propose new and emerging technology concepts and plans, seeking regional and national funding opportunities to support innovation and expansion

  • Other job duties as assigned
